This trip combines the big centers of Tibetan culture: the east Tibetan province Amdo and Central Tibet with Lhasa.You will fly to Lanzhou, the capital of the Chinese province of Gansu, via Beijing. Start your trip to the magnificent Monasteries of Labrang and Kumbum. Then it’s by train past Koko Nor Lake to Golmud.
After traversing the source of the Yangtse river a spectacular landscape awaits you: white gigantic peaks are mirrored in small lakes and on the vast plains tents of the nomads with their yak herds can be seen. A side trip to the holy Lake Namtso, the highest salt lake in Tibet at an altitude of 4600m follows.
From far away the golden roofs of the Potala are visible. Plenty of time is available to discover the once forbidden city of the Tibetan god kings. Later visit the oldest monastery Samye, located in the midst of sand dunes not far from the Tsangpo River. An exhilarating drive brings you to Lake Yamdrok, Palkor Monastery in Gyantse, Shalu and Tashilunpo in Shigatse. Savor stupendous views on your ride across the Tibetan plateau to Katmandu in Nepal. Two high passes of over 5000m have to be crossed.
